WHY MY SON DOESN'T LISTEN TO ME...

Why is my son not listening to me??? Why...Why...Why???

He has been cursed with an inventors brain...he's to smart for his own good!

He's the absent minded professor...but he has a sharp tongue to-boot...

He has to know how things work and he needs to figure it out and actually see it happen!

I am not just saying, oh wow-you built a great little Lego invention...

I am saying he sees a pile of "stuff" (metal, pvc pipes, recycling, blocks etc.) and it's like he has a little computer in his head drawing up the blue-prints to his next invention. He gets the "Mehaffey-Gaze", where his eyes look off into the distance with a blank stare on their face, that's the "Mehaffey-Gaze" and I see it too much! Especially when you are telling a story or when those cogs in the machine of his brain start moving...

Let me set these next series of pictures up for you...

I was cooking dinner after work one day, and I had went to the grocery store the day before so I had a lot of recycling that needed to be taken out. As I was putting groceries away, I was throwing the recycling on the ground in the kitchen. I asked, "Bryce while I am cooking can you put the recycling away for me?" ...his response...ok...but Mom, I have this idea...

Bryce...just please take the stuff out! Here is the million dollar answer that I get all the time,"But...Mom, uh...I have this idea...and...uh...I just need, um...I just need, this thing, because I have this idea...I want to make this bag fly like a flag...can I use this stuff to build...?

My response, "That's fine, as long as you and your sister don't fight and you pick it all up after!"

So there he went building, grabbing a thing or two out of my drawers, taking off to his room for a fan...

He fastened the bread bag with a magnetic clip to a pasta spoon on the top of a paper towel tower.

His sister sits there and his biggest fan and supporter taking it all in!

This catapult would eventually take it all down...

He had lift off...true to form, his invention worked!

But before lift off you can hear him talking to himself saying, "ok...so I need the proper wind speed and the fan needs to be at the right angle...and..."

I am telling you...He is one smart-cookie!

So you might be asking yourself, what is so bad about having an inventors mind?

This is one of my favorite things about him, I love his imagination and his ability to carry it out, but his downfall is, he can't do anything else until he finishes or executes the idea. Especially when it comes to listening to his Mom.

You can't harness that type of mind, it's my job as a Mom to help him use his powers for good and not let them get himself in trouble...he's his own worst enemy.

This little guy can make me so upset, but at the same time amaze me with his abilities!

So far...I just take a deep breath and let it go, because...

He did it for this idea that he had in his mind that ended up being amazing!

He did it for the invention...
