Grocery Shopping – Saving Money & Haul

Hey Friends, Today I wanted to talk about Grocery Shopping and how we are saving money on our grocery bill (not using coupons).  Let me just start by saying, food is expensive and if you’re not careful your grocery bill can be a runaway freight train. For us, it seemed like I could never get a handle on the amount of money we were spending on food or if that was just going to be the norm on what it cost to feed a family of 5

What we did was create a pretty tight budget for groceries. Which I’m all for because I don’t want to be spending so much money on consumable type products and have more money for vacations/family outings/experiences etc.

Let me walk you through my process…

Meal Planning.

They way I meal plan is I look and see what we have in the fridge, freezer, and pantry and look at what meals I can make with the ingredients I have on hand.

I.e., If I have canned beans in the pantry and ground beef in the freezer than I can make chili beans and all I need is seasoning or maybe some grated cheese. Do you see where I’m going?
Do what you can with what you have first, then build from there.

Since I love to cook and bake, I really had to simplify my meals during the week. Instead of doing more elaborate meals with sides during the week, I needed to save that for a nice family dinner on the weekend and keep the weeknight meals simple and less involved. That really helps!

*Also eating out is expensive, so if you don’t know how to cook or you don’t feel as comfortable in the kitchen, learn how it will save so much money!!! Get a few recipes under your belt, look up recipes on online, watch cooking videos, in this day and age everyone should have a few recipes under their belt and it will save you money.

Grocery Shopping List.

Now that I have my meal plan done I can create my grocery list. I usually have a grocery list going already because when I remember something or we run out of something during the week, I will write it down so I don’t forget.

Your grocery list needs to be comprised of everything you need, like ev-er-y-thing!

Check your pantry, check your spices, check your cleaning supplies, check your bathroom products, etc. the main reason being is you want to cut down the number of times you’re going to the store because 9 times out of 10 you will pick up items you may not “need”.

My Favorite Places to Grocery Shop.

Now that I have my list, there are two places that I like to do my grocery shopping, Walmart Grocery, and Sam’s Club…you can’t beat their prices!

Walmart has the best prices, even if the item is not on sale. Their Great Value brand out prices pretty much everything and most of the stuff we have tried and continue to buy is pretty good, I don’t feel like we are compromising.

Sam’s Club is where I get certain things but not everything. The bulk of our groceries come from Walmart but, there’re a few things we get at Sam’s Club pretty routinely like: bread, spinach (for my morning smoothie), a big bag of oranges, rotisserie chicken, coffee, laundry detergents, toilet paper, paper towels, clothing items for the kids (athletic shorts, work pants for Jer) and they have good deals during Christmas on toys and seasonal items.

My favorite way to shop though is through the Walmart Grocery Online.

You search the items on your list, add them to your cart and what I like best is you get to see your total the whole time.

After you are done, you select the date & time to when you want to pick up your groceries and by doing this you hopefully stuck close to your budget and it saved you time.

*Sam’s Club has this option too!

This is what I spent on groceries this week for a family of 5. We are trying to stay around that $125 mark but most of the time we are right over it.

The way I came up with that $125 a week for a family of five is from Jordan Page, From

She suggests you spend $100 per person, per month. We are a family of 5, so $500 for the month ÷ 4 weeks = $125/week (This is your budget for groceries/consumables. Not eating out, that a separate budget.)

{Update: We bumped it to $150 a week, $600 a Month}

Sidenote: If you ordered Great Value brand Taco Shells for .88¢ and they are sold out, they will substitute the Old El Paso’s (name brand) taco shells regularly $1.37 and still honor the .88¢ price tag. I think that’s great because if you were in the store shopping yourself, you would have to get the name brand for the sticker price. Another perk of doing the ordering online!

Pick up your groceries.

When it is time to pick up your groceries, you pull up into the designated parking spots, check in and they will be right out with your groceries.

It’s very quick and easy. At this time they will go over the substitutions if any, and then have you sign authorizing the total amount.

This whole new grocery budget is not easy and is a work in progress but, I am very motivated to keep our consumables right around $500 dollars for the whole month so we can have more money freed up to do fun things as a family.

I hope by me sharing how we grocery shop and meal plan can help you and save you a little money too!
